Potomac Zen Sangha

The Potomac Zen Sangha is located in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, five miles from Washington, DC ( Sangha Directions) and near the King St. metro station.  The Sangha is open to the public for meditation and talks about enlightenment with Zen Master Pohwa, Sunim. Each class stands on its own and no prior experience is necessary.

We accept donations, but they aren't necessary. Guidelines are $10 per class or $15 per week. Suggested student donations are half of these amounts. If you choose to give more, we will be delighted.

• Beginner's Zen Class
  
  
  • Monday 7:00PM - 9:00PM led by Zen Teacher Il-Ha
    
    
  In the moment, there are no beginners nor experts. But you should learn to bloom a fresh lotus flower each second. Zen Tea will be served along with question and answers. The class includes two 20 minute sitting sessions and a walking meditation. Just come as you are.

• Deep Zen Night
  
  
  • Friday 7:00PM - Midnight led by Zen Master Pohwa Sunim
  
  After a busy week, turn towards Zen and peaceful nighttime sitting and walking meditation. Mitigate suffering by developing a sages mind. Tiger never eats grass. Zen Warriors capture the eternal truth in every single moment of life and death. Join us for any portion of the deep Zen meditation night with Zen Master Pohwa Sunim at the Potomac Zen Sangha in the middle of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.
  • 7-8PM  20 minutes sitting / Master's Dharma Talk with Tea serving. Questions are encouraged.
  • 8-9PM  45 minutes sitting / 15 minutes walking meditation
  • 9-10PM  Private Kong-an interview with Master Sunim while others are sitting / 15 minutes walking meditation.
  • 10-11PM  45 minutes sitting / 15 minutes walking meditation
  • 11-Midnight  45 minutes sitting / 15 minutes walking meditation

• Formal Buddhist Ceremony
  
  
  • Saturday 9:00AM - 11:00AM led by Zen Master Pohwa Sunim
  
  
  Buddha means Enlightenment. Because Buddha spoke without words, Udumbara only blooms on your tongue. Join us for an hour of morning sitting followed by a formal Buddhist Ceremony with chanting and, finally, by a Dharma talk with Zen tea. A private Kong-an interview with Sunim will be available after the class. If you have a Kasa, please bring it with you.

1. Buddha’s Birthday

   Saturday, May 17th, 2008

   Come join us in celebrating Buddha’s Birthday at the Potomac Zen Sangha!
   
   Sunim will give a Buddha’s Birthday Dharma Talk. Afterwards, at about 11:15AM, we’ll cross the street for lunch at Masaya Thai Restaurant, 1019 King St. (703) 548-3736.

   The ceremony begins at 9AM with an hour of meditation.

   At 10AM, we’ll chant the Homage to the Buddhas.

   At 10:30 AM Sunim will begin his Dharma Talk.

2. EVERY FRIDAY 7PM to midnight : DEEP ZEN MEDITATION NIGHT
